Initially …
There’s this taste for the body, the skin, the flesh, snippets, scars and secret folds, invisible and indelible memories. This is what drives me in my research: the traces of time on living things.
Light and shadow often seek each other out, talk to each other…
Saying without saying, showing without showing, changing space and scale.
Engraving, drawing
For me, engraving is a bit like losing yourself in order to find yourself.
Engraving brings me something precious: the combination of slowness and urgency, an unlikely marriage that, like an eye-opener, leads to a surpassing of oneself. The urgency of forms that demand to be born, to leave a trace.
Living with the feeling that everything is disjointed and yet inexorably linked.
Time slips by. The surprise of living embraces me.
Duality as breeding ground.
The chosen slowness of burin engraving leads to a subterranean ripening of all this, impossible to anticipate. There are concise gestures, sometimes tiny, sometimes large, always a journey through time, with the senses on the alert.
Blind work, months without knowing, because I don’t make any proofs until the suite of engravings in progress is finished, until I’ve exhausted what I had to give and didn’t know.
And then there’s the twinge in the heart, an essential sign that the mirror that is the print is ready to meet other eyes.
Drawing offers a different temporality, allowing rapid execution in a primal gesture. In all cases, the aim is to get as close as possible to the essential, the fleeting, the inexpressible.
Microcosm and macrocosm are at the heart of all my work. The precise incisions of the burin guide us towards the infinitesimal and the intimate, thanks to the long process of writing in the flesh of copper. The liberated gesture of drawing imposes the reading of fragments of a fragmented world.
Everything is in motion, everything is in suspense. Space and time are a thing of the past. Organic and mineral combine in a quest to become one with the infinite.
